Thread: External HD Input/Output Error

[img]file:///tmp/moz-screenshot.jpg[/img][img]file:///tmp/moz-screenshot-1.jpg[/img]i'm not sure ubuntu issue, external hard drive worked fine ubuntu past year , half. anyways, can't copy , every time try gives me message "error writing file: input/output error". can copy files hard drive no problem. nautilus doesn't seem recognize size of disk.

i've tried on xp, there can't see files on disk, prompts me format disk try open it.

realize simplest solution reformat, hoping fix without doing this.

, if helps:
code:
sudo fsck /dev/sdb5 fsck 1.41.4 (27-jan-2009) dosfsck 3.0.1, 23 nov 2008, fat32, lfn there differences between boot sector , backup. differences: (offset:original/backup) 65:01/00 1) copy original backup 2) copy backup original 3) no action ? 1 got 9125888 bytes instead of 30516048 @ 16384 [img]file:///tmp/moz-screenshot-2.jpg[/img]

there differences between boot sector , backup.
differences: (offsetriginal/backup)
65:01/00
1) copy original backup
2) copy backup original
3) no action
i suggest run testdisk (it's in repos) on it, if going take drastic measures on in case.

testdisk can used check , restructure partitions , fat tables if required.
