Question About .css and ns_css

hello all,

i know cross-posting against forum rules, after updating older topic , not getting responses, figure best way go. original post “generated rh output wraps fit browser window.” have added below points of interest previous thread; first response fellow rh poster followed current questions.

thanks in advance, diane

the description of output sounds comprehensive - don't create whole new project this!

the projectx_ns.css created during webhelp generation - exists in output folder, not source files. rh copies original projectx.css output , creates different copy, projectx_ns.css, used when browser isn't ie (more or less, browser-sniffing logic kind of complicated).

so compared project_ns.css project.css. lo , behold! bulleted styles (non-bulleted styles had correct indents), left-indent specified being overwritten "1 pt" in project_ns.css.

what mean? beats me. might lead workaround.

workaround - take copy of projectx_ns.css. compare projectx.css, paying special attention indent settings. fix left indents don't right. copy adjusted projectx_ns.css output folder. take under different browser combinations (sounds have users willing test you, lucky thing).

if works, have brute-force workaround - copy adjusted _ns.css output every time release, overwriting nonfunctional .css.

yeah, i'd rather have explanation. maybe 1 of gurus know of one. , if workaround job, have @ least bought little time investigation.

hi all,

i apologize unearthing old topic, seamless rh firefox output has become priority company.

elisa (or may know); mentioned workaround between .css created , rh generated ns.css:

“workaround - take copy of projectx_ns.css. compare projectx.css, paying special attention indent settings. fix left indents don't right. copy adjusted projectx_ns.css output folder. take under different browser combinations.”

i hardly savvy when comes “behind scenes” workings of rh , coding. have found , accessed .css files in question, exactly, looking on terms of “indent settings?” see “margin” mentioned multiple times, beyond have no clue should looking for.

my goal see if can determine cause, , thusly remedy issue, behind rh webhelp output left-justifying bullets , numbering. using latest version of rh applicable updates, , testing firefox output latest versions , updates well.

also, noticed while researching problem, of topics within project share same .css file others, not manifest left-justify issue in firefox output. still in process of deciphering mystery.

any input appreciated!

thanks,
diane

p.s. worked out window/text wrap dilemma, helped that!.

a few things:

the cascading in cascading style sheets happens in reverse:
- external style sheet superceded topic styles inside head section.
- external style sheet , topic styles superceded specific style applications.

in addition:
- html protocol , rh compiler assign default indents lists, superceded style applications mentioned.

- depending on original source of topics (word, excel, frame, etc.), have serious filth attached of elements (lists & tables, mostly).

- "margin" might appear in css file "left-margin: 40px" example.

- least painful way display lists in media (online , print) not use styles @ all. use normal style, select list items, , click bullet or number icon in toolbar.

good luck,
leon
