Trial question: Can't open .doc files from web page

i'm using dreamweaver on mac, , have link on page should bring doc file. when preview page in safari, brings directory listing highlights file can double-click , open file. (of course, i'd love go ahead , open file, understanding dreamweaver mac doesn't support that.) however, when preview in internet explorer, either message file not found or spins , never brings anything. file in root directory of site (same directory index.html.

any ideas?
