Ethernet shield problem

hello!

i have received ethernet shield half year ago. couldn't make work, moved on.
however, stumbling on it, thought give crack. went arduino ide, examples , dhcpaddressprinter.
typed in desired mac address etc.
then once uploading sketch:

code: [select]
binary sketch size: 13,436 bytes (of 32,256 byte maximum)
avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x00

on bottom. suggestions?

dont connect . upload blink example. make ensure working fine
if giving error means problem bootloader ,tx , rx line connected interface device.
if working fine. upload ethernet code. dont connect ethernet sheild . once upload attach ur ethernet sheild in situation should work
