hello, i've been messing linux (ubuntu & opensuse mainly) few days , can't seem audio working properly. i've tried various different walkthroughs , fixes don't seem work.

have compaq sr1629uk (standard except ati aiw 2006 graphics upgrade) , when install linux (ubuntu/opensuse) audio quiet (probably less 25% loud in windows). have checked volume controls, tried modifying alsa-base.conf, tried gnome-alsamixer, padevchooser etc etc etc. whenever manage sound louder becomes heavily distorted.

appreciated love able use linux.
