Thread: Why Linux Isn't the Most Popular Operating System
in nutshell: there many variations, , although linux has package management systems, isn't enough.
okay, first off how love linux - opened whole new world in computing me (bios, partitions, filesystems, , whole lot more). know not popular operating system - why isn't it? believe has quite few main problems, relating incompatibility itself:
- there multiple installer package types (.deb, .rpm, .tgz, etc) - means packages not compatible between distributions.
- programs handle stuff shouldn't (gnome handles background, gedit handles syntax highlighting, firefox handles it's icons, etc) - makes would-be-simple tasks such setting background or changing syntax coloring hell programmers, , therefore such programs tend not compatible between desktop environments.
- settings spread across different systems (/etc/default, gconf, etc).
- branding: ubuntu (most people i've talked think sounds weird), gimp (is joke?), , more.
linux lacks commercial software, commercial software on linux need make easy possible companies sell software on our repo's:
- create 'foss' packages , foss master-repo' - foss packages can uploaded foss repo' , automatically converted various package types , distributed across multiple distributions.
- make possible create installation cds compatible between distrobutions.
- introduce commercial packages scheme - setting system allows users pay packages should encourage companies adobe port packages linux. add donate feature support open-source packages. - in progress
admit 1 of main reasons why linux not popular because of windows' monopoly, is partly because windows better average user. else think?
why question asked 10 times week, , leads same thing of "it's opinion, others may think otherwise"?
