USB freezing after unplugging Arduino

hello all,
using arduino duemilanove on windows 7 64bit , i'm running issue haven't had before. when first plug in arduino usb , start ide no problems, connects com3 , uploads sketches. however, when unplug usb cable, usb ports no longer able anything. if plug arduino in, com port cant found. , if try plug in usb stick nothing happens. if try different usb port, nothing works. have restart machine , can plug in. needless wicked frustrating. help?? thanks.

anyone else had issue , resolved it?
