Cannot publish changes and creates a 0 byte file on the server

i have recommended contribute customer update site , it's important can this. version works theirs not.
they can log onto site , select edit. have control of file if try , logon seems fine. when try , publish changes after long pause message saying connection cannot made. what's more disturbing file changing on site replaced 0 byte file therefore removing page trying modify.
any thoughts on please? stumped.
