Thread: Partition Planning- Dual Boot Ubuntu 8.10 and Vista
hi everyone,
new linux (and site) , had installed (with acquaintance) ubuntu 8.10 on computer couple of months ago. tried set dual boot between , windows vista because i'm not ready have ubuntu. however, once ubuntu installed not boot vista because said had error (discussed here). result starting on again set-up process dual booting , input on partions plan make.
here initial partition set had (on 232 gb), in exact order listed in ubuntu partitions editor (sorry don't recall exact program name):
/dev/sda1 extended 141 gb
/dev/sda5 linux swap 7 gb
/dev/sda6 ext3 38 gb (the / partition)
/dev/sda7 ext3 95 gb (the /home partition)
unallocated unallocated 30 gb
/dev/sda2 fat32 11 gb (recovery partition)
/dev/sda3 ntfs 50 gb (vista os partition)
first questions are, 141gb "extended" partition for, why take first spot, , why aren't gb included in total computer has available? have read vista may not work if doesn't first spot, true , if so, how fix it?
believe plan during first set /home folder act working folder use access documents both windows , ubuntu research suggests needs in fat32 format rather ext3 in order accessed vista. true?
here came partitions on new set-up (approx. 232 gb):
/dev/sda1 extended 141 gb *
/dev/sda2 ntfs 90 gb (vista os partition) **
/dev/sda3 fat32 15 gb (recovery partition)
/dev/sda5 fat32 80 gb (shared data partition)
/dev/sda6 etx3 20 gb (the / partition)
/dev/sda7 ext3 15 gb (the /home partition)
/dev/sda8 linx swap 8 gb
* above, have no idea is, guess automatic?
**i wish shrink 50 gb more shared space small vista wants me make when resize , worried using non-vista program because don't want same error had last time, see other post details.
have changed things around bit first partition set had, based on readings (specifically here) there small separate /home ubuntu instead of shared data spot because have read useful when want upgrade version of ubuntu. couldn't find information whether should/could create mount point (forward slash thing, right? don't know them) shared data folder if did this. if don't create 1 still able access ubuntu? if need create one, there specific name should given since have used /home?
other suggestions new partitions (or critiques of proposed set up) welcome, , can provide further information if required.
taking time read through of this!
p.s. don't know if should here (beginners) or in regular installation section. put here because beginner , don't know many of ubuntu terms yet.
