joebipp: don't understand mean "...making data base". mean spreadsheet produced openoffice.org/gnumeric etc or mean relational database produced application such mysql?

files produced openoffice etc held in home directory , therefore "owned" you. should not need use superuser permissions access these files. please read stickies @ start of "absolute beginner talk" section above further on this.

if file trying access called "family.dat" application created file?

please clarify , post output of following command show permissions associated each file:
code:
ls -l
