Measuring Arduino Power Consumption

i working on project trying run arduino uno long time on battery; using lower power library put system sleep, waking on external interrupt.  not getting battery life expect, trying read power consumption multimeter.  connected probes breadboard +/- strips , select ma.  showing uno drawing 3.5 ma when sleeping...and dropping 3.3 ma when awake, seems backward. 

i have couple of accessories attached (sd card, pir sensor, vga camera).

am measuring current draw incorrectly? 

any guidance appreciated
