Mega 2560 not recognized

hello all,

i have mega 2560 r3 have had year now, stopped being recognized computer (windows 7 pro 64-bit). seemed working fine earlier week, earlier today when plugged computer upload new code, computer did not recognize arduino @ - no "bing-bing" sound indicated device had been attached, nothing in device manager, , nothing in arduino ide. of arduino, however, seemed working fine - power led lit up, , sketch began running. things seemed odd arduino a). rx , tx leds glowing faintly, , b). atmega16u2 got bit warm. has else faced issue? because sketch , power seem working fine, pretty sure issue lies within atmega16u2 (i have had issues guy before - sketch uploads freezing, etc.). if turns out built-in programmer circuit fried, there way can use external programmer?

have had success using icsp header on board program it?
