CFMX 6 Mail Problems

we have been experiencing number of issues related cfmx 6's mail handling. several applications have experienced issues mail messages being delayed , taking 4 hours leave mail server. additionally, we're having recipients getting 3 or 4 copies of message sent once.

to narrow down problem have tried using both localhost smtp server , external smtp server, encounter problem both. in case of duplicate emails, coldfusion logs indicate message being sent once.

unfortunately, upgrade mx 6.1 or 7 isn't in cards near future. have suggestions on resolving problem or narrowing down further?
